Day 1: Child brides and Huw's pants

Day one: Amroth - Penally

The weather smiled on us during today following the threat of bad weather over past few days. We were slightly late starting (best laid plans etc) but managed to start proper by 12.30. After arriving in Amroth courtesy of Steve "Jammer" James (thanks again for the lift mate), we had a chance encounter with local Pembrokeshire historian Roscoe Howells. We spent a good half hour with Roscoe, who at 91 years of age and an author of over 25 books on local history, was as bright and as lucid as a man half his age. He and his wife (who was about 30 years younger than him and he referred to as his 'child bride'!) provided some helpful tips and directions as well as a bit of pre-walk entertainment and were also sporting enough to pose for a photo before we headed off for the first stretch of our journey.

We have been joined for the weekend by Huw Davies, a long time friend and Welsh Hook celebrity, and he has, to be expected, brightened up considerably the arduous 10 miles achieved today. The highlight would be Huw changing into a pair of Dan's shorts. Huw standing in a field in a pair of pants would be a sight for sore eyes for many we are sure!

We meandered our way towards Tenby after having lunch in Saundersfoot, encountering a few steep inclines that were taxing at this stage of the game. Dan's certainty that we were to follow the little signs with a man on instead of the little signs with the acorn on, meant we took in what we read later are termed "optional detours"; in other words at this stage - "avoid at all costs". Lovely views though!

We managed to negotiate the inclines successfully, and also the potential pit-falls of meeting drunken revellers whilst passing through Tenby town centre on a Saturday evening. In fact the only people we were stopped by were Huw's parents Anne and Gwyn, who were there on a day out with the Pen-y-Bont Chapel Sunday school, and who we bumped into completely by chance!

After passing through Tenby we arrived at our roughly planned first night destination. The village of Penally is sparse and quiet which is just what is required this evening. We found an overpriced camp site run by a buffoon and after setting up camp we headed into the village for some food. We have just had a pub dinner at the Cross Inn and are relaxing over a few pints, before heading back to get some shut eye before the pace picks up tomorrow when we hope to add another 4 miles to the 10 we did today (that's 14 by the way).

Finally just a quick update for Steve Wise, who has sponsored us £1 for every pub we go in on route - current total stands at 3!

Thinking of all our friends and family back home and with the weather due to deteriorate from tomorrow onwards, we will have to see if future posts here will be the blog novel this one has turned out to be.

Tight Calves!
